About this episode
Elliott Beach is back for the first time since his HURT YS100M debut, and he and KJ walk us through crewing and pacing Jada at Badwater 135 — mandatory sauna training nobody enjoys, the Walmart aisle crawl, and the Dungeon Crawler Carl van theme complete with matching boxer shorts and a Princess Donut light. Strap in for an hour of how the crew hid problems from Jada and lamented losing their Powerade. Also: the portable flush toilet. Clutch.
Then Badger 100, notoriously the hottest race on earth, which was cold and pouring rain — Bob made seventy-odd grilled cheeses (with pickles in them, fight him), and Orangeville ran a full Waffle House theme with name tags, a slushy machine, a call-ahead menu board, and Elliott chasing runners down the trail with hash browns.
Finally Eastern States 100, where Rocksylvania earns the name: twenty-thousand-plus feet of climbing, a chest-deep creek crossing, a, rattlesnakes, blueberry pancakes you summon with an air horn and then can't eat, and a 54% DNF rate. Elliott dropped at Tomb Flats; KJ dry-heaved his way to a buckle and then got eaten alive by biting flies in the finish-line grass. Plus a wonderful but HURTful surprise for our runners during the race.

Heat Champion, or We Narrated a Website for 45 Minutes
Bob is officially back to running — gingerly. Coach Claude drew up a twelve-week run-walk plan, the carbon plate has been demoted to his walking shoes, and there's now a barbell in the garage and daily ankle rehab, all in the name of never rolling that ankle mid-race again. Meanwhile KJ is deep in Badwater taper: endless sauna sessions that have earned him a genuine, app-certified Heat Champion belt (cup-holder mods pending), uphill treadmill work, and a Precision Hydration race-day plan he walks us through gram by gram. Then it goes gloriously off the rails. We narrate the Precision Hydration case-study site for what KJ swears is “excellent pod,” mistake a 29029 Everesting event for a “hiking race” and rename it wilderness sauntering, break down the logistics of pacing Badwater two miles at a time, and launch the KJ Pacer Lottery for Eastern States (is there an Alex?). Also: orange Kit Kats vs. Terry's Chocolate Orange, a Hot Topic / Journey's / FYE mall-nostalgia tour, the I Got That On Vinyl website, Starlink rentals for the Badger beer-mile stream, and — after Oak Miller became the first person ever to complain about the show — a hard-fought Jewish-vs-Italian deli debate. Back in a couple of days; see you at Badger. Got a DNF — or a DNOF — story of your own? Go write it at https://chatdnf.com. Tricerabottoms
Bob is out of injury jail — sort of. The bone bruise still won't quit, so there's now a rigid carbon plate living in one shoe, a health-insurance mystery he refuses to let go of, and a certain very-trending procedure finally checked off the list. Meanwhile KJ preps for Badwater the only sensible way: baking in his condo sauna until he's a certified Heat Champion (belt included), then cramming a Furnace 50K, Eastern States, and a wedding into the same three weeks. We recap Western States from the couch — Tammy Hellings' incredible late rally, the new pole and traction-device rules, and Oak's fateful portapotty miscalculation — then coin the term ultrarunning has been missing: the tricerabottom (you'll have to listen). Captain's Corner heads to the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library in Staunton (pronounced "Stanton"), Bob strikes out at the Met but wins Central Park, KJ visits the Flight 93 Memorial, and caps it off with a surprise first-place relay leg at Laurel Highlands. Back in about a month — we'll make July happen. Got a DNF — or a DNOF — story of your own? Go write it at https://chatdnf.com. Green Bank, Giant Dishes
KJ tours the Green Bank Observatory inside West Virginia's radio-quiet zone (no cell phones, very big dishes) and runs the WV Trail Festival at Snowshoe — fog, a pizza-oven aid station, and a website worth copying. Bob hits Cedar Point and the Field Museum's Pokémon Fossil exhibit while nursing a bone bruise. We do actually talk some about ultrarunning: Cocodona, controversial finishes, running funks, volunteering and finding running joy again. No swimming, no depressing shit. Got a DNF story of your own?
